It sounds like you didn't use Akeeba Backup (as I suggested) to back up your site before migrating to J5 and also that you went ahead with the migration even with the knowledge that you have incompatible extensions that could cause problems. (just my observations from your description of your subsequent actions).
If you're back on J4.4, and you're still being prompted to "upgrade" again, I would try to turn the Joomla update channel back to "default" which will stop it from trying to tell you to upgrade to J5.
I don't know what backup method you're using, or why it failed. How was that done - are you on a hosting service using cPanel, or is this your server or a VPS?
Second possible solution:
Try reinstalling Joomla (over the top) with your existing J4 version, which may restore/refresh the files. Under JOomla Update you should see a "reinstall Core files" orange button, but otherwise, you can try to install an update package (same version of J4 as you have) from https://downloads.joomla.org/cms/joomla4 using the update package through Joomla Update (Upload and Update method).
Third possible solution:
A fresh default install of Joomla 4. When this is done, go into the configuration.php file and change the database connection info to your actual site's database including the db name, user and password. That should result in the site working again.
The next step is to reinstall any extensions you were using before including Virtuemart (this process should not have harmed your site's content or data). I would also install Akeeba Backup and make an immediate backup of the site.
For any potential restore, you will also need Akeeba Kickstart (not a Joomla extension but a utility that restores your site), and the JPA backup archive file.
I would not therefore update to J5 until you have a J5-compatible version for VirtueMart (and your template).
